THE LEGACY OF THE FIRST CHRISTIANS

The Apostolic Church of St Gregory the Illuminator, better known as the Armenian Church, is the fist Christian church to be built in Singapore. Up until recently, it remained the only Orthodox Church of the city-state.

The Armenians were among the first Christian migrants to Singapore. Back then, Armenia was a small and rocky country east of Turkey which was constantly overrun by more powerful, often warring, neighbouring countries. This urged some Armenians to come to Singapore in the early 1800s in search of a better life. Here they made up a small, wealthy and religious community who needed their own place of worship in accordance with their faith.
