FULFILLING PATIENTS' DREAM OF HAVING HEALTHY BABIES

Dr Tan is the first Singaporean to obtain the Diploma in Fetal Medicine from the Fetal Medicine Foundation in 2002. She was among the very first batch of specialists who attended the course in London and in 2003 pioneered the use of the first trimester screening for Down syndrome in Singapore using both nuchal scan and serum screening

Dedicated to the field of prenatal diagnosis and care of both mother and fetus, Dr Tan uses top of the line equipment Philips IU 22 with 3D and 4D ultrasound capabilities. She performs invasive procedures like amniocentesis, chorionic villous samplings, fetal blood samplings, amnioinfusions, amniodrainage as and when the cases dictate the need.

Dr Tan is also certified by Singapore's Ministry of Health to do in-vitro-fertilisation (IVF). IVF is also known as 'test-tube baby' technique, when several eggs are removed from the ovary, then fertilized in the laboratory with sperm from the male partner and the resulting embryos transferred to the womb for implantation and pregnancy. Although IVF was developed to treat couples whose principal cause of infertility is tubal damage, Dr Tan's experience shows that it is also helpful in those with endometriosis, sperm disorders (poor sperm counts or morphology) and even unexplained infertility.

Another field in which Dr Tan has keen interest in is Age Management which helps women to mature gracefully, maintaining the strength of youth through proper nutrition, exercise programmes and possibly supplements to correct the hormonal balances. "It is a very rewarding experience to help women keep their youth and vitality well beyond their chronological age," says Dr Tan.

Dr Tan has authored medical papers and presented papers at numerous medical forums in Singapore and overseas. She won several prestigious awards in her field of specialization including the HMDP Scholarship for Fetal Echocardiography at Yale School of Medicine in 1995 and the Young Investigator Award by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics in 1995.

"I enjoy the challenge of helping the want-to-be parents conceive and thereafter help them through their pregnancies. My goal is to assist patients achieve their dreams of having healthy babies," says affable Dr Tan, herself mother of three daughters.
